Samling Scholars and the Hexham Orpheus Choir bring good cheer with Christmas concert
Bach: Christmas Oratorio
7pm, Saturday 3 December 2011
Singers in one of Tynedale's best-loved choirs are set to bring the musical festive spirit to Hexham with a concert of Bach's Christmas Oratorio in Hexham Abbey on December 3.
Under the baton of conductor Glenn Davis will be the 70-strong Hexham Orpheus Choir, joined by two Samling Scholars: baritone Philip Smith and tenor Stephen Chambers. These two young singers have growing international reputations: last year Stephen made his BBC Proms debut and Philip his at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall. We at Samling are ecstatic that these two singers are being given the opportunity to return to the North-East once again and delight audiences as two promising artists within classical music.
Also joining the choir will be soloists Jessica Holmes, Emma Banks and Susan Davis and an orchestra drawn from among the north-east’s finest instrumental players.
Philip participated in Masterclass during 2010 and was invited to take part in Samling’s annual showcase the same year. Steven is one of our more recent Scholars joining Samling in May 2011 in a Masterclass led by Della Jones and John Mark Ainsley. Philip and Stephen join over 200 of the most talented and promising young singers and pianists in classical music as Samling Scholars, continuing our legacy of excellence.
‘The choir and I are delighted these brilliant singers … are able to join us for our concert,’ says Glenn. ‘It looks set to be a Christmas celebration full of good cheer, a concert to remember.’
