British Mezzo Soprano Bethan Langford is currently studying on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She is a proud recipient of the Elizabeth Eagle- Bott Award for visually impaired musicians and is grateful to the RNIB for their continued support. At the Guildhall School, Bethan is the recipient of the Susan Longfield prize, Paul Hamburger lieder prize and the Violette Szabo award for English song. She is the winner of the 2013 John Fussell Award and is a Samling Artist. Bethan will make her Wigmore Hall recital debut, as the winner of the Concordia Founders’ Prize, with duo partner Ben-San Lau in April 2015. Bethan is grateful to be supported by a Sybill Tutton Award from Help Musicians and the Worshipful Company of Skinners.
Opera credits include Proserpina (cover) Orfeo for Royal Opera at the Roundhouse, Noble Orphan Der Rosenkavalier (Glyndebourne Festival and BBC Proms), the Hag East o’ the Sun, West o’ the Moon (WorkshOPERA at the Tête a Tête Festival), Nancy Albert Herring (Mid Wales Opera Young Artist Programme), Hansel Hänsel und Gretel (Guernsey Symphony Orchestra), Prince Orlofsky Die Fledermaus (Clonter Opera) and Second Bridesmaid Le Nozze di Figaro (Guildhall Opera). Scenes include Beatrice Béatrice et Bénédict, Romeo I Capuleti e I Montecchi Octavian der Rosenkavalier and Dorabella Così fan tutte. In April 2012 Bethan played Winifred Gurney in the premiere of Iain Burnside’s A Soldier and a Maker at the Barbican Centre and Cheltenham Festival, and received very warm reviews. She returned to the play this year as Ethel Gurney in a special recording for BBC Radio 3.
As a passionate recitalist, Bethan has performed at many leading concert venues and festivals around the UK. Recently, Bethan opened the closing concert of the Oxford Lieder Festival which was recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 3. She made her Wigmore Hall solo debut in March 2013, accompanied by Graham Johnson, for Sarah Walker’s 70th Birthday concert, and is thrilled to be returning this year. She is a member of the Guildhall Song Guild and is excited to be a 2015 Les Azuriales Young Artist.
