John Mackenzie

John was born in Dumbarton. He studied with Alan Watt at the RSAMD, where he gained a B.A. (musical studies) and the M. Mus. in Advanced Opera with distinction. In 1999 he won the Mary Garden International Prize at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival.

He attended the Ravinia Festival, Illinois where he studied recital repertoire with Sir Thomas Allen, Dawn Upshaw, Benita Valente and Martin Katz.

John has toured internationally with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment singing Joabel and un Guerrier in Charpentier’s David et Jonathas, sung in opera gala concerts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and performed regularly with Le Concert d’Astrée

From his wide concert repertoire John has performed Dream of Gerontius and Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera,  Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is frequently in demand as the eponymous Elijah.

In the immediate future John will be part of the touring cast of Purcell’s Fairy Queen with Le Concert d’Astrée.
