Nominated for a 2014 What’s On Stage Breakthrough in Opera Award and in the Young Artist category at the 2015 International Opera Awards, British baritone Ross Ramgobin read English and Modern Drama Studies at Brunel University, London, before attending London’s Royal Academy of Music, studying with Glenville Hargreaves and Jonathan Papp, where he gained his MA (DIst.) in Vocal Studies and his Advanced Diploma from Royal Academy Opera. At the Royal Academy, his roles included Claudio Béatrice et Bénédict, Papageno Die Zauberflöte, Lackey Ariadne auf Naxos and the title role in Eugene Onegin.
During 2013 / 2014, he was a member of the National Opera Studio, his studies supported by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Carr Gregory Trust and a Sybil Tutton Award, administered by the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund. Winner of the Tom Hammond Prize from the Royal Academy of Music, he was a Semi-Finalist in the 2013 Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition and a Finalist in the 2013 Hampshire Singing Competition.
Roles elsewhere have included the title role in Owen Wingrave at the Aldeburgh and Edinburgh Festivals, Belcore L’elisir d’amore at the Verbier Festival, Arasse Siroe, Re di Persia at the International Handel Festival, Göttingen, (a performance now available on Accent CD), the title role in Eugene Onegin for Bury Court Opera and the Southbank Sinfonia in Anghiari and Ischia and Innkeeper The Three Pintos for University College Opera. He also appeared with the Georg Solti Academia di Bel Canto in The Solti Centennial Concert with Valery Gergiev and the World Orchestra for Peace singing the Quartet from Rigoletto at Carnegie Hall and Chicago Symphony Center.
Conductors with whom he has worked include Jane Glover, Laurence Cummings, the late Sir Colin Davis, Elgar Howarth, Jésus Lopez-Cobos, Simon Over, Peter Robinson and Mark Wigglesworth.
He is a Samling Artist, and his current engagements include Rambashi The Firework Maker’s Daughter and Miteb Cities of Salt for the Royal Opera, London, at the Linbury Studio Theatre, a return to the Göttingen Festival as Pallante Agrippina, Death Savitri and Mahler Rückert Lieder with the Melos Sinfonia,Masetto Don Giovanni for OTC, Dublin, Yuri The Ice Break for Birmingham Opera Company, the 2015 Leeds Castle Classical Open Air Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a Samling Concert at the Wigmore Hall and a Solti Academia concert at the Scène Ella Fitzgerald, Geneva.
