Samling Academy

A new Samling project for young singers and pianists in the North East

Samling is internationally known for its work with emerging young professional singers and pianists. Through ‘Samling Academy ’ we would like to focus on the next generation in the North East of England and those who may be inspired to follow in their footsteps.

Samling Academy will involve the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University and The Sage Gateshead’s Weekend School singers, including pupils
of Miranda Wright. Miranda is a Samling Scholar, having participated in Masterclass in 1999.

Young singers have to wait for their voices to mature before they can begin to pursue a career in classical singing. This new project will provide a taste of ‘what it takes’ to be a
performer and inspire its participants towards their future goals, increase their confidence and address issues of technique, performance and stage-craft.

The programme will also be open to young pianists hoping to gain skills in accompaniment, something which is not often taught outside of the conservatoire environment yet is such an important skill for every aspiring pianist.

It is hoped that the project will become an annual focus for classical singing in the region and enable The Sage Gateshead and Newcastle University to forge a link, through Samling, in classical performance.
