Today we’re profiling pianist Jonathan Ware – don’t forget you can see Jonathan and seven other outstanding Samling Artists on stage next Saturday in our public Masterclass and Concert at Sage Gateshead.
Born in Texas, Jonathan studied at the Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School and the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin. He won 1st Prize at the 2014 Stuttgart Song Competition with baritone Ludwig Mittelhammer. You can read more about Jonathan on his YCAT page.
A recent review of Jonathan said:
‘How Ware forms words into the keys in his piano preludes and (especially) postludes, how his fine sound positively creeps into the words, and how he, for instance, advances the strophic and musical dénouement in Goethe’s “Ganymed”: This is thrilling sorcery.’
Stuttgarter Nachrichten, Internertionale Hugo Wolf Akademie / October 2015
You can see Jonathan in performance here with Ludwig Mittelhammer, with whom he received the 1st prize at the Hugo Wolf International Song Competition in 2014, and here with another Samling Artist, soprano Sarah-Jane Brandon, at The International Meistersinger Akademie.
This is Jonathan’s second Samling Artist Programme week, having first attended in 2013. He has also since been a Leader on numerous occasions for Samling Academy.
Jonathan will be joined by seven other Samling Artists in a public Masterclass and Concert on Saturday 27 February at Sage Two, Sage Gateshead, led by internationally-renowned mezzo Ann Murray DBE, the great German baritone Olaf Bär and Royal Opera House pianist Caroline Dowdle.
