For seventeen years we have hosted some of the greatest stars in the world of classical singing and accompaniment. Through our Masterclass programme, they come to the North East to teach and perform alongside the very best international young artists. The nine who will be taking part in this public Masterclass are among the brightest hopes for our opera houses and concert halls. See them at work here first, as Sir Thomas Allen leads this insightful and lively afternoon with the Australian opera star Yvonne Kenny and pianist Caroline Dowdle.

Samling invites audiences to share the progress and exceptional talents of its February 2013 Scholars. Presented by two of opera’s greats, Sir Thomas Allen and Yvonne Kenny, with pianist Caroline Dowdle, nine of the most promising young international musicians will exhibit what they have learnt following a week’s intensive study with Samling. Alongside their mentors they will showcase an evening of opera ensembles, arias and song: a perfect welcome for newcomers to classical music, as well as practising musicians and enthusiasts.

Verdi’s Requiem is one of the best loved choral works in the repertory, with its operatic blend of powerful choral writing, dramatic solo passages and striking orchestration. Written in memory of the writer and national hero Alessandro Manzoni, its second performance, at the famous opera house of La Scala, Milan, was greeted with tumultuous applause. Tonight’s performance renews a partnership between the Newcastle Bach Choir, talented young singers and instrumentalists from Newcastle University, and soloists drawn from the distinguished ranks of Samling Scholars.

Samling Academy Opera: Albert Herring

Samling Academy presents Benjamin Britten’s bittersweet comic masterpiece in this fully staged production led by Samling Scholars - director Miranda Wright, music director James Baillieu and baritone Johnny Herford. They join a cast of outstanding young North Easterners - all participants in Samling Academy - to tell this coming-of-age story.

Samling Academy aims to set new standards in classical singing and piano accompaniment for young people who live or choose to study in the North East. Following auditions, participants will benefit from working with the same experts and artists who form part of Samling’s international Masterclass programme, nurturing outstanding young professional musicians.

Samling Showcase

Samling's Patron Sir Thomas Allen and Malcolm Martineau lead this showcase performance in one of the world’s most important recital venues. Demonstrating artistic excellence across generations, they perform alongside Samling Scholars soprano Kate Valentine, mezzo-soprano Helen Sherman, tenor Luis Gomes, baritone Ben McAteer and pianist John Reid.
Programme includes: Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson, Aaron Copland; 'Das iridische Leben' and 'Urlicht', Gustav Mahler; Cinco canciones populares argentinas, Ginastera; and ‘Silent Noon’, ‘The Watermill’ & ‘Linden Lea’, Ralph Vaughan Williams.
