Jessica Leary

Samling Artist Programme: 2014

Noted for her ‘Impressive Acting’ (The Times) and ‘Searing Purity’ (The Scotsman), soprano Jessica Leary graduated from the Alexander Gibson Opera Course (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) with Distinction, and completed her training with English National Opera Opera Works Programme 2014/15.  Previously, she obtained a First Class Honours Bachelor of Music Degree from Edinburgh University, and undertook additional training at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as an International Exchange Student.

A 2014 Samling Artist and Britten-Pears Young Artist, Jessica was recently a semi-finalist in the Royal Overseas League Competition and London Bach Singing Competition. Further accolades include the Ye Cronies Opera Prize, the Frank Spedding Lieder Prize, Bill Dewar Memorial Award, Governor’s Recital Prize (2nd Prize), Tovey Memorial Award, and a full scholarship administered by the Robertson Trust.

Jessica is currently covering an Edelknabe Lohengrin Bayreuth Festival Opera (Germany). Recent roles include Sandman (Cover) Hansel and Gretel (Scottish Opera), Helena A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Scottish Opera, in collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Eurydice Orpheus in the Underworld (Scottish Opera Education), and Damigella/Venere (Cover Amore/ Drusilla) L’incoronazione di Poppea (Aldeburgh Music, under Richard Egarr). Other roles include Poppea L’incoronazione di Poppea,  Anna Reich Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Lucia The Rape of Lucretia, Naiad Ariadne Auf Naxos, Anne Truelove The Rake’s Progress, and Esmerelda The Bartered Bride.

Highlights on the concert platform include Bach St Matthew Passion with the Dunedin Consort (c. John Butt), Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (recorded for BBC Radio 3), Lisette in excerpts from La Rondine with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (c. Jean-Claude Picard), a concert performance of Monteverdi L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Snape Proms (under Richard Egarr), and a recital of newly discovered editions of Mendelssohn lieder (broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland).

A keen recitalist, Jessica is an artist for The Concordia Foundation, Live Music Now, and Music in Hospitals, with whom she performs regularly.

Current and future plans include concerts with the Dunedin Consort, Choir of the Age of Enlightenment, and Ludus Baroque, recitals as an artist for The Concordia Foundation and Live Music Now, and a return season as a member for the Bayreuth Festival Chorus.
