News from Samling Artists – September 2022

Congratulations to Anna Cavaliero who won the Jean Meikle Prize for a duo along with pianist Sebastian Issler at the 2022 Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition. Samling Artist pianist Ella O’Neill accompanied the overall song prize winner Laurence Kilsby.

Anna also makes her debut with Glyndebourne on Tour this autumn, appearing as Grace in a brand new opera Glass Human by Samantha Fernando, with performances in Glyndebourne, Milton Keynes, Canterbury, Norwich and Liverpool

Gramophone Awards

Nicky Spence’s Vaughan Williams recital and Louise Alder and Joseph Middleton’s French song disc ‘Chère nuit’ have both been shortlisted in the Song category of this year’s Gramophone Awards. The winners will be announced in early October.

European Debuts

Svetlina Stoyanova made her debut for Latvian National Opera in the title role of La Cenerentola on 29 September, with further performances in October and December; Claire Barnett-Jones makes her French operatic debut on 6 October in Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse, as Jezibaba in Rusalka and in January 2023 Nardus Williams will make her house and role debut as Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for L’Opéra de Rouen Normandie.

English Touring Opera

English Touring Opera’s ‘Handelfest’ triple bill opens next week, touring around the southern UK and Midlands.

Samling Artists in the North East

Amy J Payne makes her mainstage debut as a guest artist for Opera North as Annina La traviata this seaon, and introduces the story of the opera in a promotional video. The production comes to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal from 1 – 3 November.

Bethany Horak-Hallett will be appearing in venues across the North East as guest artist for Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Baroque by Candlelight Christmas tour, with a programme including J.S. Bach’s cantata Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut. You can see Bethany performing in Sunderland, Carlisle, Alnwick, Hexham, Kendal and Darlington.

Rebecca Afonwy-Jones and Ross Ramgobin are soloists for Newcastle Bach Choir’s performance of Tippett’s A Child of our Time in Newcastle Cathedral on 26 November, along with former Samling Academy Singers Ana Fernandez-Guerra and Richard Pinkstone.

Patrick Terry appears on The Early Opera Company’s acclaimed new recording of Handel’s Amadigi di Gaula, directed by Christian Curnyn. The recording received a 5-star review in BBC Music Magazine and was Erica Jeal’s pick for Recording of the Week in the Guardian.

Looking ahead to next summer, Glyndebourne have announced their 2023 festival productions, with casting including Nardus Williams, Adina L’elisir d’amore, Lauren Fagan, Helena, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Stuart Jackson, Jupiter Semele and in The Rake’s Progress Louise Alder as Ann Trulove and Sam Carl as Nick Shadow.
